When Should I Apply for Benefits?

The Social Security benefit application process is long and, at times, complicated. So many of the people we interact with do not even know where to start. I often tell them the first thing they need to do is apply for benefits. However, most people do not know when to do this, so I always tell them the following.

You should apply for disability benefits as soon as possible after the onset of your disability. It can take three to five months for your application to be processed; if your initial application is denied, the process can take two years or longer. However, in order to give your initial claim the greatest possible chance of being accepted, it must be thorough. DO take the time to fill out every item of every form in as much detail as possible. Missing or incomplete information will result in a denial every time.

We have been navigating clients through the maze that is the Social Security process for more than a decade.
